Google has opened up access to its Search Labs test program, allowing users to try out its upcoming search engine update, with the most notable change being the Search Generative Experience, or SGE.
To be clear, Search Labs is not technically open to the public as you have to join a waiting list first. If you have already registered, please check your email account for an email address invitation from Google because they are currently developing. Don’t worry if you haven’t applied yet as there’s still room on the waiting list on desktop and mobile.
To join on a computer, you must first install Google Chrome on your computer. From there go to Search Lab site, select Join Waiting List and wait for the invitation to arrive. On mobile devices, launch the Google app. An icon resembling a science beaker should appear in the upper left corner of the screen. As before, select Join Waiting List, then wait for the invitation. Search Lab is available on both iOS and Android, so no one is left out. Install the latest app update if you don’t see the icon.
Limited time only
If you’re not a Google One Premium subscriber, it may take a while to receive your invitation. AND latest report from 9To5Google states that Premium subscribers get “priority access” to Search Labs, although “it won’t be immediate.” “Access slots are currently limited,” but more will open in the “coming weeks.”
But once you get an invite, act fast. SGE and other Search Labs experiments will Only available for a limited time. We don’t know how long, so we asked Google for more information. This story will be updated if we get a response.
Ever since SGE was first revealed, there has been quite a bit of hype around SGE during I/O 2023. Technology fundamentally improves Google Search to provide long, detailed and contextual answers to queries. Might as well completely change the way people use search.
A word of advice
For the lucky few who get early access to SGE, Google recommends starting with simple terms so you can get used to how the AI works. Once you get the hang of it, try entering more specific queries. One of SGE’s highlighted use cases is helping people shop. AI can generate a detailed list of features, reviews, price points, and even a link to the product itself.
In addition to Google’s tips, we have some of our own as we have used many generative AI models Bing Down Brave summary. One thing we’ve learned is that generative AIs can hallucinate, meaning they come up with completely false information that bears no resemblance to reality. Don’t always believe what you read. And be mindful of what you type as generative AIs store the information you type. In fact, some big tech corporations like Samsung have banned their employees from using ChatGPT after some confidential information was leaked.
