Marvel’s Wolverine is another superhero that has been treated to Insomniac Games and it sounds very promising.
Marvel’s Wolverine, provided to us by the studio behind the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, is expected to have a more “mature” tone than the Spider-Man games. This is not surprising given that it stars grizzly, James “Logan” Howlett’s mutant with Adamantium claws who is not known for his gentle approach.
As with the Spider-Man games, Insomniac said in PlayStation Blog that he wants to “respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular.” It is while looking for “opportunities to feel fresh and truly reflect the spirit of Insomnia.”
Marvel’s Wolverine was confirmed to be in “very early development” when it was revealed in late 2021, so details are pretty sparse at the moment. We’re still waiting for the release date to be confirmed, but we hope to have more details on this exclusive PS5 in the near future.
In the meantime, we are speculating on what Insomniac can do with Logan’s character and gathered all the latest news and rumors about the game. Read on to find out everything we know so far about Marvel’s Wolverine and what we want to see.

Marvel’s Wolverine release date and platform
Marvel’s Wolverine has no release date at the moment and unfortunately it will probably be a while before we get our hands on it. Insomniac Games said the game was in “very early stage” when it was announced in late 2021, so we wouldn’t expect to see it at least late 2023 – especially considering Insomniac Games is currently working on Spider- Manem 2 by Marvel, to be released in 2023.
Interestingly, Microsoft claimed that Sony would release Wolverine Marvel in 2023. Tech4Gamers (opens in a new tab)), Microsoft argues why the acquisition should continue. Thus, it outlines Sony’s plans for 2023, stating: “PlayStation also has a range of proprietary and third-party exclusive titles to be launched in 2023, including Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Horizon, Final Fantasy XVI and abandoned. ”
It has been confirmed that all of these games will be released in 2023, with the exception of Wolverine. It’s not clear if this is speculation from Microsoft or if the company knows something we don’t know, but it could suggest Marvel’s Wolverine will be released sooner than expected.
Marvel’s Wolverine is set to be an exclusive PS5 console, as is Spider-Man, so it won’t be available on the Xbox Series X or the Xbox Series S. It shouldn’t be too surprising considering how Sony acquired Insomniac Games in 2019 It also skips the consoles of the last Generation, so PS4 owners are also out of luck.
However, there is a good chance that it will appear on PC. We are witnessing Sony’s carefully thought-out PC strategy that advised both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PC in June 2022. As such, it would not be surprising if Wolverine Marvel would eventually join them.
Marvel Wolverine trailer
PlayStation 2021 presentation
Marvel’s Wolverine was announced at the Sony PlayStation Showcase in September 2021, with a short trailer giving us a first glimpse of Insomniac’s approach to Logan.
The teaser trailer shows a rundown bar, with injured men lying on the floor, then goes to the rear view of a man in a cowboy hat and checkered shirt drinking at the bar, his ankles and areas covered in blood. In the background, one of the wounded gets up and pulls out a knife. Sensing the attacker, the man at the bar, the man at the bar clenches his fist, causing long metal claws to pop out of them. Yes, it’s Wolverine.
The trailer may not give us a look at the gameplay or Logan himself, but it sets the tone for Marvel’s Wolverine – which at first glance feels like a bloodier, mature alternative to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man. You can check out the trailer below:
News and rumors about Marvel’s Wolverine
Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in Deadpool 3
Following his retirement from his role in Logan in 2017, Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine again in Deadpool 3, which is scheduled for release in 2024. Twitterfans wonder if he will also return to Marvel’s Wolverine. While this has not been confirmed, you can watch the preview video below.

Easter eggs in the trailer
The Wolverine teaser trailer seems to include some Easter Eggs that may hint at the storyline and setting of the game.
First, the trailer setting seems to throw a big clue as to when and where Marvel’s Wolverine is taking place. Logan drinks at the Princess Bar, located in Madripoor (which can be recognized from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), which we can see from the bar sign and Madipoor tourist poster.
In Marvel Comics Presents Volume 1 # 1 (1988), Wolverine visits the Princess Bar while hunting a criminal named Roche. After wiping the bar’s floor with Roche’s enforcers – who are trying to get security money from the bar owner O’Donnell – Wolverine becomes a regular at the bar called “Patch”, and even co-owns it for a time. The bar was essentially Logan’s home away from home during the time the X-Men were inactive. Does Insomniac Games suggest this is the time when Marvel Wolverine is set to play out? Will we see Logan tackle the criminal underworld?
Another possible Easter Egg is the Radio Lowtown 104.8 poster. Lowtown is a neighborhood in Madipoor, so Madipoor as scenery seems quite plausible. But 104.8 seems to refer to Marvel Earth-1048, the Marvel Spider-Man universe. This seems to imply that Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Wolverine games both take place in the same universe, meaning we can see the Marvel Game universe being created.
But the radio station isn’t the only number that seems to relate to a particular comic. The license plate on the strip reads “HLK 181” which seems to hark back to The Incredible Hulk # 18 – which features Wolverine. Does this mean we could see the Hulk in Marvel’s Wolverine? We hope so again.
A “full-size” game with a “mature tone”
According to Marvel’s Wolverine Creative Director Brian Horton, the standalone James “Logan” Howlett adventure on PS5 will be a full-blown “mature tone” game. Horton confirmed this in response to a fan on Twitter (opens in a new tab) with the question of whether Wolverine on PS5 will be “great game or” great morale “.
Directed by Spider-Man: Miles Morales drives creativity
In PlayStation blog post (opens in a new tab)Insomniac Games has revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine is being directed by Brian Horton (Creative Director) and Cameron Christian (Game Director), who led the creative work for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
With respect for DNA, with a fresh approach
Insomniac Games said that while it intends to honor the “DNA” of what makes Wolverine popular, it will set a new tone for Weapon X.
“In the spirit of our Spider-Man games, our goal is not only to respect the DNA of what makes a character so popular, but also to look for opportunities to feel fresh and truly reflect the spirit of Insomniac,” wrote Insomniac Games. in a post on the PlayStation Blog. According to the developer, despite its early development, Marvel’s Wolverine boasts “emotional narrative and state-of-the-art gameplay.”
Marvel’s Wolverine: what we want to see
Embracing Wolverine’s dark side
While Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales are critically acclaimed, it cannot be denied that they are quite family friendly at times. After all, Spider-Man himself is your “Spidey friendly neighborhood”. But Wolverine is not only about sun and rainbows, its history and character are quite dark.
Hopefully, Insomniac will explore this side of Logan in Wolverine, offering a more mature experience than Spider-Man. We’re not asking for unreasonable violence, but to really delve into Wolverine’s story (depending on when this game is set), you can’t run away from the darker moments. You also can’t slash enemies without a little bloodshed.
The emergence of other Marvel heroes …
We don’t want them to focus on the spotlight, but it would be nice to see Insomniac approach other Marvel heroes appearing in Wolverine as side characters. Which characters would really depend on the story Insomniac wants to tell, and which Marvel universe is largely based on its narrative. But we hope some of the X-Men will do cameos, including Jean Gray, Professor X, and maybe even Rogue.
… and infamous villains
We currently don’t know who the main opponent will be in Marvel’s Wolverine, but there are a lot of infamous villains to choose from – and we imagine some may star in smaller roles. We hope to see Logan fighting Sabertooth, Lady Deathstrike and even the Silver Samurai. Or maybe we’ll see him just struggling to topple Weapon X, in which he was subjected to painful experiments.
The Marvel gaming universe
We are working with Insomniac Games now other Marvel’s PS5 title, we hope to see Marvel Game Universe in the future.
In our opinion, it might work pretty well. As with the MCU, Insomniac has created standalone products that allow us to get to know the individual superheroes in his universe, if we continue to see more Marvel heroes getting their own games, can we potentially see crossovers in the future? We hope that Crystal Dynamic’s Marvel Avengers certainly leave a lot to be desired.
