Ubisoft has revealed that the upcoming pirate action game Skull and bones it’s still coming and will go into the next open beta. It will run from August 25 to August 28.
Those interested in the long-awaited, long-delayed upcoming game can sign up for closed beta access on the game’s official website. It’s been more than a year since the publisher released an overview trailer of war on the high seas. No in-game action was shown at this year’s Ubisoft Forward event, just a live performance of the title song with a few cutscenes.
Skull and bones has had several betas since its first unveiling, the last of which was in January this year with a 6-hour play window. Footage in the engine has slowly leaked over the months and years since its announcement, but the overall state of the game is yet to be verifiable at this point in 2023. We still don’t really know how far we are from an actual game release – despite vine rumors that it will be “early” later this year (early financial year for Ubisoft). A few details have been shared about how much of the title will be available in the August release window.
Skull and bones was first announced in 2017 at this year’s E3 conference with a theatrical reveal. Six long years have passed since that day, and the release window still remains unclear. A game that is supposed to be based on the foundations of excellence Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flagstill hasn’t been given a specific release date or a specific direction of where it’s headed yet.
It’s disappointing that no new gameplay was revealed at this year’s Ubisoft Forward event, especially when the game that inspired it was critically acclaimed for taking a bold new direction. Skull and bones has the potential to take the single-player action into a multiplayer world, but it’s currently unknown exactly when we’ll see more of this elusive pirate sim.
