The first teaser Meg 2: Ev is here, and it looks like it’s going to be exactly the kind of B OTT movie like the first one Meg should be (but missed a bit). The earlier film was a tad too direct for a film in which no one would believe Jason Statham that a giant shark lives under a special layer of the ocean and is about to eat it.
But Mega 2 he is not straightforward. At least not Mega 2trailer that starts with dinosaurs and ends with Jason Statham using a wave surfing jet ski to attack a giant shark.
Mega 2 will hit theaters on August 4 and will likely appear on HBO Max later as it is a Warner Bros. production. Will it be among our best HBO Max movies? Well, here’s the trailer – decide for yourself.
One of the things that intrigues me about this movie is that it seems to draw inspiration from different versions King Kongwhere a group of scientists/documentarians go to a strange land full of terrifying creatures. Almost every version of the movie includes it, from the 1930s and 70s versions to Peter Jackson’s 2000s to Kong: Skull Island.
There’s usually some kind of battle between Kong and a dinosaur, and Kong is a bit ambiguous in these early stages – terrifying, but also a savior. And it looks like it Mega 2 he wants some of it too, opening with a megalodon treating T. Rex like Kong… but like in a dog toy, not a monkey.
Then we get shots of the expedition to the (probably) titular trench. When people walk in space – I’m sorry, sea - suits with guns (which seem to work underwater), it looks like they’re about to be attacked by a giant octopus or squid hidden in the ocean floor. We don’t get to see much of what happens next, but who wants to bet that a certain large-scale shark will turn out to be what keeps them alive?
I’m not sure how long my King Kong analogy will hold up to this point though. I don’t think the 70’s King Kong it included mecha suits or a scene where Charles Bronson rides atop a biplane with a spear in his hand, but it’s a shame.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t read too much into the trailer and it really nods King Kongdirector – director Ben Wheatley doesn’t mind tackling a classic: his 2015 film High rise is an adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel, and he directed the Netflix version of Daphne du Maurier Rebecca. And actually, my problem with that Rebecca The movie was that it wasn’t intense or weird enough, but Mega 2 looks very intense and weird so I’m on board. So to say.
If you’re looking for something high-end, you might prefer the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic, Oppenheimer. But I’ll take both, thank you.
